Great Bear Lake

The Great Bear Lake is the biggest lake that lies entirely within Canada. Compared to the other lakes, only Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan are larger than the Great Bear Lake. The lake covers an area of 12,096 sq. miles and it is 320 Km. long and around 175 Kms wide. It is also one of the deepest lakes as it is over 1400 Ft. deep. This lake drains through the Great Bear River into the Michigan River and becomes part of Canada’s longest navigable river system.

One of the uniqueness of the Great Bear Lake is its shape, like a giant amoeba with five big arms. These arms of the lake are McVicar, McTavish, Keith, Smith and Dease. Part of the Great Bear Lake lies within the Arctic Circle and it also spreads across parts of Canada’s two important land regions, the Canadian Shield and the northern interior plains.

The Great Bear Lake is also the home for distinct natural vegetation. It lies in the immense wilderness with some parts of it reaching into the Tundra and the hard rocks of the Canadian Shield. Moreover, the Great Bear Lake is icebound for most time of the year. This place is a growing attraction for a large number of outdoor activities.
