One of the Great Lakes attractions is the Shipwreck Museum, the only one of its kind dedicated to the perils and heroism of the maritime of the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, a group of divers studied the wrecks and opened the museum in 1986. The famous Light Tower at Whitefish Point has been in uninterrupted operation for over 147 years. The Society is now responsible for sustaining this wonderful lighthouse, a symbol for so many Michigan people and guests.
It is located at the site of the oldest lighthouse on Lake Superior at Whitefish Point, Michigan. In its museum gallery you will see dramatic shipwreck legends come to life. The artifacts and exhibits will tell stories of sailors and ships that braved the water of the Lake Superior and those who were lost to menacing waves. One of the most popular exhibits in the Shipwreck museum is the Edmund Fitzgerald memorial that features the Ship Bell. Her legend was the most mysterious and controversial of all shipwreck tales heard around the Great Lakes. The legend of Edmund Fitzgerald surpassed in books, film and media only by that of the Titanic. It was on November 10, 1975 when Fitzgerald together with her 29-crew men lost on Lake Superior, 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, Michigan where the site of the Great Lake Shipwreck Museum is located.
